Up ‘N Running Physio

If you’re looking for an expert physio that takes the time to understand your issue — and how to resolve it — look no further.

A Sports Physio in Canberra, Built Around Time

Up ’N Running Physio operates from the AFL Pavilion at the Phillip Oval Sporting Precinct in Canberra. Founded by Rob Hunt, the clinic was built on a simple philosophy: quality physiotherapy requires time, attention, and clear communication.

Rob holds a Master of Sports Physiotherapy from La Trobe University and is an APA Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist — a formal recognition awarded by the Australian Physiotherapy Association. He also holds Level 3 accreditation as a Rugby Health Practitioner.

The clinic provides sports and general physiotherapy, remedial and sports massage, post-operative rehabilitation, and exercise prescription. Initial consultations run for a full hour, while review appointments are a minimum of 45 minutes, allowing sufficient time for a thorough assessment, understanding of your injury, diagnosis, treatment, and exercise prescription planning.

This approach was intentional. After years of seeing patients rushed through short appointments in larger clinics, Rob created a practice designed to deliver more comprehensive and personalised care.

About Rob Hunt

Rob moved to Canberra in 2010 to join the Australian Institute of Sport, working with the FFA Football program. What was originally planned as a short-term move became a long-term home, with more than sixteen years now spent living and working in Canberra.

Before relocating, Rob built an extensive career across elite sport, working with professional clubs and national teams in Australia and overseas. He served as Physiotherapist and Rehabilitation Manager at Hawthorn and Collingwood Football Clubs, where he also worked as team runner on match days.

His cricket experience includes touring internationally with the Australian Under-19 Cricket Team during World Cup campaigns in Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Pakistan, and later travelling with Australia A through Scotland and Ireland alongside players including Matthew Hayden, Jason Gillespie, Mike Hussey, and coach Alan Border.

One of the most formative experiences of his career came in 1999, when he was appointed Physiotherapist and Conditioning Coach for the Bangladesh National Cricket Team during the ICC Cricket World Cup in England. As the first person to hold the combined role for Bangladesh, Rob worked closely with the team during a significant period in its development toward Test status. The role demanded adaptability across cultural, logistical, and communication challenges, and remains one of the most rewarding chapters of his professional life.

Rob initially established Up ’N Running Physio part-time while simultaneously managing the Physiotherapy Department at Duntroon, overseeing a service treating military personnel. For several years, his days began early and often finished with evening clinic appointments before eventually transitioning fully into private practice.

Outside the clinic, Rob also teaches at the University of Canberra, works with Canberra Grammar School athletes, provides coverage for AFL Canberra representative programs, and remains actively involved in mentoring physiotherapists and sports trainers. More recently, his son’s involvement in gymnastics has introduced him to another sporting community and its unique demands.

The Up ’N Running Team

Rob now works alongside two highly experienced part-time practitioners, both with backgrounds in elite sport.

Byron Field is the lead physiotherapist for Rugby Australia and the Wallabies and previously held positions as Head of Performance Health at the ACT Brumbies and Head physio roles with professional Rugby Union teams in England.

He graduated from the University of Canberra in 2004 with a degree in Psychology and Sport & Exercise Science, and has since completed a Masters of Physiotherapy, Masters in Sport & Exercise Physiotherapy and a Masters in Strength & Conditioning. He’s currently completing his PhD, focusing on the recognition of concussion in rugby union, specifically the use of instrumented mouthguards to assist with the identification of head impacts.

Byron is interested in empowering his patients and athletes to fulfil their potential and provides programs tailored to each individual’s unique needs.

Dan, also a Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, is the High Performance Manager and Lead Physiotherapist for the ACT Academy of Sport, working with many local elite athletes and sports.

His qualifications include: a Master’s Degree in Advanced Clinical Physiotherapy (Sports) from the University of South Australia in 2017, a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the University of South Australia in 2012, and he is currently undertaking a Master’s of Applied Clinical Epidemiology (Sports) at the University of Canberra.

Together, the team brings an uncommon depth of elite-level experience to a private physiotherapy setting.

What to Expect

At Up ’N Running Physio, treatment begins with understanding the underlying cause of the problem, not simply managing symptoms.

For all injuries, Rob and his team prioritise accurate diagnosis and clear clinical reasoning. This may include liaising with referring practitioners, organising imaging where appropriate, and coordinating care with orthopaedic specialists or other healthcare providers.

For persistent or recurring conditions, the same methodical approach applies. Rehabilitation plans are tailored to the individual and often include structured exercise programs, alongside detailed education to help patients better understand the contributing factors behind their condition.

Rob’s approach is practical, consultative, and focused on long-term outcomes. Whether managing acute injuries, chronic pain, or post-operative recovery, patients leave with a clear understanding of their condition and a plan tailored to their lifestyle and goals.

A consultative approach to physio care

“Injuries can be multifactorial so it’s not just about the injured body part. It’s having a clear understanding of the probable causes and a clear understanding of how we can we help clients within their lifestyle and needs”

~ Rob Hunt
