Rubicon Restaurant

A Canberra institution, quietly tucked away in Griffith

Rubicon sits on Barker Street in the leafy suburb of Griffith, just a short drive from the city centre. Inside, four small dining rooms create a warm, intimate, and unhurried atmosphere. Candlelight, soft carpet underfoot, and a rear terrace draped in fairy lights give the place a character built slowly over more than two decades.

Food that earns its reputation

Owen Kenyon opened Rubicon in January 2000 with a clear idea of what he wanted to create: a restaurant where exceptional food and a genuinely enjoyable atmosphere could exist in the same room without one compromising the other. More than 25 years later, that vision is still very much intact.

The menu is contemporary Australian, seasonally driven and carefully constructed. Small plates sit alongside more substantial mains, and a degustation option is available for those who want the full experience. Dishes like yellowtail kingfish sashimi, confit duck and the gruyere and chestnut soufflé have become the kind of things that regulars plan their visits around. The kitchen applies classical technique to quality local produce, and the results speak for themselves.

Wine is taken seriously here

Rubicon has always been as much about wine as it is about food. The list is extensive and covers local, regional and international producers, with the kind of range that rewards both the curious and the knowledgeable. Owen himself often works the floor, bringing genuine sommelier expertise to the table and helping guests find something that perfectly complements the meal. It is one of those rare places where the wine experience is as considered as the food.

A room that feels like it belongs to you

The four small dining rooms mean that even a busy service feels intimate. Larger groups can be accommodated, and private dining is available, but the default experience at Rubicon is one of quiet, unhurried meals in a space that feels genuinely personal.

A celebration, a long business dinner, or a mid-week treat all sit comfortably here. Owen’s three children now work alongside him in the restaurant, and that family presence adds something to the atmosphere that is hard to manufacture.

One of Canberra’s most consistent restaurants

Many restaurants open with promise and fade. Rubicon has done the opposite, accumulating awards and loyal diners over more than two decades by simply doing what it does very well and refusing to be distracted. For visitors to Canberra, it is a genuine find. For locals, it is a reliable favourite worth returning to again and again.

Open Monday to Saturday for dinner from 5:30pm.

Rubicon delivers an excellent dining experience with beautifully presented dishes and well-balanced flavours. Everything from the starters to dessert was flavoursome. Service was attentive but not overbearing, and the atmosphere was warm and intimate. Definitely will be back.
