Some clients have been seeing the same therapist at Quintessence Nail & Beauty for ten years. That kind of loyalty isn’t built on treatments alone, and owner Alicia Fragopoulos knows it.

Finding a beauty salon in Belconnen that feels like a genuine retreat takes some doing. Quintessence, tucked into the Page Shopping Centre, has been that place for over two decades, expanding three times since it opened in 2003 as word spread through the community. 

Alicia purchased the business in 2016, trading a secure public service career for something she could feel more directly: the particular kind of unwinding that comes from being genuinely looked after. 

“Every day brings different treatments, clients and conversations,” she said. “It’s very rewarding to see clients leaving happy, fresh and relaxed.”

Canberra born and bred, Alicia holds a Diploma in Beauty Therapy and takes professional development seriously. The team attends Beauty Expo in Sydney every year or so, drawing on educational seminars and supplier updates to keep their skills current. 

“Sometimes it’s easy to get set in your ways,” she explains, “and it’s good to see what’s new out there and changes to products and treatments that might make it better for our clients and therapists.”

A Beauty Salon in Belconnen Built on Word of Mouth

Quintessence has grown almost entirely through referral. “A lot of referrals and a lot of family members, daughters, grandmothers, and the like come to us,” Alicia said. That multigenerational reach reflects what the salon actually offers: a treatment menu broad enough that clients rarely need to go anywhere else. 

Seven private single treatment rooms, plus a couples room, house a full range of services including nails, massage, facials, IPL hair removal, lashes and brows, waxing, spray tanning, teeth whitening, and Dermalux LED light therapy. 

Alicia recently upgraded the salon’s laser machine to add IPL skin rejuvenation for lifting, tightening, and acne scarring, with tattoo removal launching soon.

The salon also welcomes male clients for waxing, pedicures, and more, and Alicia is matter-of-fact about the reason. “It’s not just about looking good, it’s also about feeling good and self-care,” she said. 

The team is inclusive in other practical ways: a 10% seniors’ discount runs every Tuesday, and Afterpay is available across treatments. They also offer a 10% student discount too.

What Keeps Clients Coming Back to Quintessence

Staff retention at Quintessence tells its own story. 

One therapist has been there for around eight years, others are approaching five years. “Generally, you can see the same person every time,” Alicia said. For inherently personal treatments, waxing, laser, and body treatments, among them, consistency matters. 

Clients who have visited describe a calm, unhurried space that feels like a little retreat from the outside world, with attention to detail that carries through every step of a treatment.

During a massage or facial, the focus shifts entirely to helping the client switch off. That attentiveness, Alicia suggests, is what keeps people returning year after year.

Away from the salon, Alicia owns a couple of V8s, and she enjoys spending time with her pet macaw (and her family too, of course.) “There’s not a lot my clients don’t know about me,” she said. “I’m a pretty open book.” 

Quintessence has been a finalist in the local business awards every year since the programme came to Canberra, a recognition that mirrors what clients consistently say: this is a salon that earns its reputation one appointment at a time.
