A Canberra Cleaning Business Built on Word of Mouth
Lee arrived in Australia from Singapore in 1985 and has been in Canberra ever since. Her path to running a cleaning business was anything but direct. She spent years at the ACT Department of Education, then moved into the private sector, and when the Global Financial Crisis hit in 2008 it forced a rethink. A friend suggested cleaning. Lee gave it a go, found she was good at it, and by 2013 had registered Dream City Cleaning formally.
In thirteen years of operation, she’s never advertised. Every client comes through Google or a personal recommendation. She’s also been an approved contractor for Defence Housing Australia for close to a decade. DHA cleaning standards are notoriously unforgiving, and the contract isn’t one you hold onto without delivering consistently.
A Domestic Focus by Choice
Dream City Cleaning focuses on residential work. Lee tried the commercial side early on and decided it wasn’t where the business belonged. Residential is where it has stayed, and where her expertise has deepened over the years.
The team works with around 25 real estate agencies across Canberra, handling end of lease cleans and pre-sale cleans alongside regular household bookings. Some of those agencies have been referring clients to Dream City for years, with property managers describing the work as more consistent than anything else they’ve used over similar stretches of time.

The Same Team, Every Visit
Dream City Cleaning employs its staff directly rather than outsourcing to contractors. Keys are collected each morning and returned each evening via a secure key safe. Lee’s preference is to send the same team to each household on every visit, and that consistency isn’t accidental. Some clients have been booking with Dream City for the full thirteen years the business has been operating. Staff tenure follows a similar pattern: one team member has been with the business for a decade, and Lee is candid that paying people well is how you keep the people worth keeping.
If a regular team member is sick or on leave, someone trained to the same standard steps in. The system is built so that a change in personnel doesn’t mean a change in the quality of the clean.
