Capital Smiles Orthodontics

Once a month, for two years, Dr Jasprit Nirmal Singh boarded a plane to Germany. She was already building a highly specialised orthodontic career, but when she decided to master lingual orthodontics (braces fitted behind the teeth where they remain hidden from view), an exciting new direction emerged.

The reason, she explains, was simple. The Germans were leading the field of lingual orthodontics, and she wasn’t interested in doing it by halves.

For two years she attended Hannover Medical School, studying under pioneer Professor Dirk Wiechmann and completing what was, at the time, the only master’s degree in lingual orthodontics in the world.

Combined with her earlier specialist training in London, that decision shaped the direction of the practice she would later build in Canberra.

Where Capital Smiles began

Dr. Jasprit had been working across Sydney and Canberra, but found herself gravitating toward our nation’s capital. “I much prefer Canberra to Sydney,” she recalls, “and that’s how I ended up here.” She had lived in big cities all her life but had come to value what she describes as “a much calmer pace.”

Capital Smiles opened in Deakin in 2021, during the COVID period, and she still remembers the sleepless nights that came with starting a business during that turbulent time. Regardless, “It’s been the best decision ever, honestly,” she reflects.

What are lingual orthodontics?

Dr. Jasprit noticed something was missing in Canberra. No one was offering lingual orthodontics, even though demand was clearly there, especially, she explains, “for people who want braces but don’t want to be visibly seen to be having them.”

Lingual orthodontics remains the treatment Dr. Jasprit is most closely associated with. It is a  groundbreaking approach to orthodontics in which fixed braces are applied behind the teeth, rather than in front. With lingual orthodontics you have the benefits of traditional fixed braces whilst them being hidden from public view.

Due to the steep learning curve, Dr. Jasprit is one of the leading specialists offering lingual orthodontics in Australia.

This specialisation also reaches beyond the clinic. She regularly speaks on lingual orthodontics at conferences across Australia and abroad, a recent engagement including the January 2026 German Lingual Orthodontic Conference in Düsseldorf.

Dr. Jasprit is also working on continuing professional development events for Canberra dentists so they can learn more about lingual orthodontics, a field she notes many people, and even some dentists, still know very little about.

Providing a full range of orthodontic treatment

Capital Smiles offers a full range of orthodontic treatment, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces, early intervention treatment for children, jaw correction planning and retainers.

But orthodontics are not just for children – the practice commonly treats patients from age six or seven through to people in their seventies, and Dr. Jasprit is clear there is no upper age limit as long as teeth and gums are healthy.

A specialist clinic for Canberra families

Capital Smiles sits in the Deakin medical precinct, close to oral surgeons, a paediatric dentist, a prosthodontist and Calvary John James Hospital. Inside, the clinic is designed to feel warmer and more relaxed than a standard treatment space, which fits with Dr. Jasprit’s broader view that orthodontic care should feel clear and manageable rather than intimidating.

That is especially important for children. The team takes time to explain each step before anything begins, showing young patients the instruments they will use and describing what to expect.

“We get a lot of anxious kids coming in,” she says. “But we try and talk them through everything and that puts them at ease.”

Outside work, Dr. Jasprit admits she no longer has time for the painting she loved when she was younger. Early mornings are dedicated for weightlifting instead. But in some ways, she says, orthodontics fills an artistic bent. “Because orthodontics is very much art and science, there is that artistic component to it, which is really nice.”

For someone on a mission to bring lingual orthodontics to Canberra, it seems Dr. Jasprit has found the right canvas.
