Canberra Spine Centre

If you’ve ever walked into a healthcare clinic and felt like just another number on a chart, you already understand how rare it is to find a practice that treats you like a whole person. Canberra Spine Centre, led by Dr Jon Powderly and Dr Isaac Edgar, is one of those rare places.

About Canberra Spine Centre

Jon Powderly opened Canberra Spine Centre in 2002, starting alone with a small admin team in the old TAB building across the road from where the clinic sits now, where confused walk-ins occasionally came in hoping to place a bet. The practice moved to its current building, a former medical centre, in 2009 and began taking on associate chiropractors from 2010. There are now six practitioners on the team.

The clinic sees patients from six weeks old through to their mid-nineties, including several patients who have been with them since the very beginning and has been coming in for maintenance care for close to twenty years. General chiropractic, sports, paediatric, and pregnancy presentations are all within scope. X-rays are done in-house, DVA patients are seen, and HICAPS claims is available.

Canberra’s Only Hill DT Spinal Decompression Table

For people dealing with more complex spinal issues, sciatic nerve pain, or numbness caused by disc problems, Canberra Spine Centre offers something you will not find anywhere else in the region. They are home to the only Hill DT Spinal Decompression Table in Canberra. Studies have indicated that this is potentially a very effective treatment pathway particularly for those with lower back and sciatic pain, as well as nerve related numbness.

The clinic continuously invests in modern technology and updated assessment methods, so you are always getting a current and considered approach to whatever you are dealing with.

Jon Powderly and Isaac Edgar

Jon Powderly came to chiropractic through a gymnastics injury in his teens. He completed a five-year degree at RMIT, graduated in 1995 with a clinical excellence award, and then spent five years working across more than twenty clinics in five countries. During that time, he helped establish a volunteer chiropractic clinic at a drug rehabilitation centre in Barcelona, which he says is still operating today. He moved to Canberra to be with his wife, Salena, opened the practice in 2002, and he’s been here ever since.

Isaac Edgar grew up in Albury, where a childhood packed with sport meant regular chiropractor visits for the usual run of musculoskeletal injuries, and those visits left a clear impression. He went on to represent NSW in football, water polo, and basketball, played in the TAC Cup with the Murray Bushrangers from age sixteen, and completed work experience with the Hawthorn and Box Hill football teams, where his interest in how the body works properly took hold. He trained at RMIT, worked in Melbourne, moved to Canberra in 2020, and joined the clinic. He became a partner last year, a shift he describes as a learning curve and a roller coaster, made steadier by having a partner alongside him.

“Our mission at Canberra Spine Centre is to help educate and guide as many families in Canberra to optimal health through great chiropractic care and education.”

Your First Visit To Canberra Spine Centre

The first appointment covers a full history, a thorough examination, and X-rays where needed, with the report of findings delivered at a separate second appointment, to ensure no shortcuts are taken before treatment begins. Progress is tracked through regular re-testing, so there’s actual data behind how things are moving.

First appointments here tend to run longer than people expect, and the team doesn’t move on until each step’s been explained clearly. People who arrive apprehensive, carrying injuries that’ve been managed rather than resolved for years, tend to leave with a clearer picture of what’s actually going on in their bodies than they had when they arrived.

“People often come in and say it’s just got a homely feel. Sometimes they even come in early for their appointment just to sit and enjoy the atmosphere we’ve created”

~ Jon Powderly

How the practice has grown

With six chiropractors on staff, Canberra Spine Centre has built a team with experience spanning pregnancy and paediatric care, sports injury rehabilitation, scoliosis, and even animal chiropractic. Yes, four-legged patients are welcome too. Jon regularly presents to workplaces and community groups on spine health and the nervous system, which tells you something about how seriously he takes the education side of what he does.

Over 10,000 Canberra Patients and Still Going Strong

Canberra Spine Centre has seen over 10,000 patients through its doors since opening. Even more telling is that many of those patients have been coming back for more than 20 years.

“The approach has never been about growing for the sake of growing…organic, quality-focused growth means the standard of care you receive today is every bit as high as what the very first patients experienced decades ago.”

~ Jon Powderly

Whether you are walking in with a stiff neck, debilitating sciatica, or you simply want to take better care of your body for the long haul, this is a team that will meet you where you are and will work with dedication and compassion to get you where you want to be.
