Black Salt Dining
Lakeside dining on the Kingston Foreshore
Black Salt Dining sits at the edge of Lake Burley Griffin in Kingston, tucked away from the busier end of the foreshore strip. The views across the water are hard to beat, and the setting has that rare quality of feeling both special and genuinely relaxed at the same time. Whether you arrive for a quiet weekday lunch or a Saturday night dinner, the atmosphere invites you to slow down and enjoy the occasion.
It is the kind of place that earns a loyal following quickly, and it has done exactly that since opening in late 2023.
Contemporary cooking with real craft behind it
The menu at Black Salt covers a lot of ground, and does it well. Contemporary Australian dishes sit alongside Italian-influenced pastas and pizzas, with small plates for grazing and more substantial mains for those who want to settle in properly. The kitchen sources from small, quality suppliers, and the difference shows on the plate.
Dishes like pumpkin gnocchi, barramundi and duck have become firm favourites with regulars. The kitchen has a way of making food feel both elevated and comfortable, which is not always easy to pull off. Expect clean presentation, generous portions and the occasional complimentary bite to start things off.
The wine list is thoughtful and well-priced, with local and regional options alongside broader selections. BYO is also welcome for those who want to bring something special.
A family business that cares about the details
Black Salt is run by a family that built this restaurant from a genuine love of hospitality. Head chef TJ Singh has cooked in some of Canberra’s better kitchens, and that experience shows in the food’s consistency and confidence. His wife, Serah, manages the floor with warmth and professionalism, and her background in high-end hotel hospitality is evident in the smooth running of the whole experience.
The staff know the menu well, the service is attentive without being intrusive, and the overall feel is one of a team that genuinely wants guests to have a good time.
A spot that works for almost any occasion
Black Salt handles a wide range of visits well. It suits a relaxed midweek lunch just as comfortably as it does a milestone anniversary dinner. There is a kids menu for families, a banquet option for groups, and enough on the wine and cocktail front to keep things interesting throughout the meal.
The lakeside setting adds something to every visit. Lunch with the water sparkling outside, or dinner as the foreshore lights come on, both have their own particular appeal.
Worth the booking
Black Salt Dining has quickly become one of the better restaurants on the Kingston Foreshore, and the reviews from locals and visitors alike reflect that. Reservations are recommended, particularly on weekends.
Open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner.

A fantastic find on the waterfront in Kingston with excellent service, delicious & beautifully presented dishes. We ate the dessert too quickly so didn’t get a photo but the chocolate parfait was imaginative and delightful. My main was a wonderful combination of perfectly cooked barramundi with butter & citrus flavours. The other was pork belly cooked to a crispy perfection. We will be back.
